You could have two problems. There is the mechanical lock cylinder that the key goes into, and there is a resin sealed electrical switch that the cylinder 'plugs' into inside the shifter housing.
On the bottom of the lock cylinder is a little 'tab' that rotates the electrical switch to turn on the ignition, and the starter and all that. You probably either broke the tab off the bottom of the lock cylinder, in which case you need to replace the cylinder, or the receiving plug in the electrical switch broke, and you need a new switch.
Does the key turn free, or can you still feel the detent when you turn the key to run the starter? If you turn the key and the cyl spins freely, you probably broke the little metal tab off the back of the cylinder. If you can feel the detent for the starter where it springs back, that's in the electrical switch, then it's either a wiring problem, or the elec switch is messed up.
I had the cylinder in mine break, and I was able to get the cylinder out and turn the switch with a screwdriver for a few weeks to be able to drive the car until I got time to put in the new parts, but to get either of them out you have to take the whole shifter housing apart to get to them from underneath (done that way for anti-theft).
I did a quick search, and the parts are the same as for the whole 900 series, lock cyl and switch. If you can afford it while it's apart, I'd do both especially if your key is a little sticky or the tumblers catch or feel worn out. It's a pain to get the assembly out, and you will need to make or buy the special tool to take out the three-pointed security nuts that hold the assembly down (anti-theft again).
If you need help with it, I can put up scans of my manual when the time comes if you are going to do it yourself. It's not hard, but there's a special way to release the spring retainer that holds the lock cylinder in the housing if you have to replace the cyl.
Best,
Drew
