Saab engine in DKW with missing engine?

A pretty much rust-free, completely undented and intact DKW 3=6 coupe and come into my sights. I want it but am unsure about what to do about the fact that it has it's engine missing. The transmission is still there. The DKW engine appears to be remarkably similar to the Saab 850 and the transmission is also a four speed on the column. Supposedly, these transmissions are particularly sturdy.
What ideas do you guys have about an engine for this car? I have thought about a complete V4 drivetrain with the radiator still behind the engine with an electric fan. I don't know whether the shifter could be adjusted to work.
Alternately, it might be that a Saab 850 would bolt to the transmission and it could be modified to give a bit more power. This should not disturb the weight distribution and would be pretty authentic.
Thanks for your ideas.
