Freewheel is welded up & can't remove clutch shaft seal

The freewheel gear has been completely welded up - so, no freewheel option for me - at least not on this tranny! :-/
The freewheel hub teeth are completely *trashed*. The selector fork looks much bigger than what I see in others photos - and it looks like it has been grinding wuit a bit against the clutch shaft.
I'd like to remove the clutch shaft, take out the selector fork, and install the freewhel lockout sleeve (and not re-install the fork) -- but I cant get the darned clutch shaft sealing ring out to save my life.
I dont want to really whack and pry at the seal too much since its sitting in that soft aluminum casing. The seal isn't all rubber - it has a fairly wide metal face that seems to have bonded to the housing.
Any tips on getting this sucker out? I've tried tapping the clutch shaft out from the drivers/tranny side - but the diagram I have shows a 3rd snap ring that would prevent the shaft from coming out from the clutch side. (Snap ring located between clutch bearing and bellhousing - which I cant get to because of the damned clutch shaft seal.)
