Saab95: I just went out and checked the wiring on my 70 96, ( I have to
reinvent the magneto every time I work with a distributored car anymore!)
You might check to see that you have it wired right: the current from the
ignition switch connects to the + side of the coil, the negative side goes
to the distributor. I think a coil may work either way, but the polarity is
different. Sticking a spark plug on the end of the coil wire may have too
many slips between the cup and the lips. The easy way to check the coil is
this: Grab the wire that goes from the top of the coil tower to the center
of the distributor cap and pull the end out of the distributor cap. 2):Take
the distributor cap off the distributor so yoiu can see the points. 3):
Make sure the points are closed completely. 4): Turn the ignition switch on. 5): Hold the loose end of the coil wire about a 1/4" away from the metal engine block with one hand,6): With a plastic handled screwdriver in
the other hand, pry the points apart several times while watching for spark
at the end of the coil wire. If the coil is good and the second (smaller) wire to the distributor is good, there should be a spark jump from the coil
wire to the block. You say you have current to the coil, so if it doesn't
make a spark it has to be the coil, wire to the distributor, a ground inside the distributor that is grounding the points. You might pull the
distributor out and examine its innards closely under good light, to see all the wires and stuff are assembled correctly. The problem seems to be
between the input to the coil and the spark plug. Good Luck!
