If I understand correctly, you haven't tried changing the plug wires yet, right? I would think about doing that at this point. Make sure the wire ends are making good contact in their sockets. Also, if you have removed the distributor, you might want to make sure it is reinstalled correctly. If the shaft position is off by a gear tooth or more, the rotor may not synch with the cap contacts when the points are closed (as well as throwing the timing way off).
