Hi Kyle
The average of 6 force measurements on my Hydraulic pedal is 25.6 lbs
Force on Master Cylinder Shaft is 25.6 x (31/4) = 198.4 Lbs
Force Slave Cylinder exerts on pressure plate = 198.4 x (585/285) = 407.2 lbs
31 cm = Distance pedal pad to pedal pivot point
4 cm = Distance of Master shaft clevis to pedal pivot point
585 Sqmm = effective slave cylinder area
285 Sqmm = area of master cylinder
Now working backwards for a cable operated clutch for the same condition clutch
Force in cable is 407.2 x (5.25/17.5) = 122.2 lbs
Therefore force on pedal is 122.2 x (6/23) = 31.9 lbs
5.25 cm = radius of clutch release fork
17.5 cm = radius of cable arm on top of transmission
6 cm = Distance of cable attachment to pivot point on pedal
23 cm = Distance pedal pad to pedal pivot point
So in a theoretical world a Hydraulic clutch is approx 20% lighter than a Cable.
Cheers – Martin (new Zealand)
