The general opinion does seem to be that the 94 is somewhat inferior to later models - specifically the shift linkage in the 5-speed and the suspension.
On the brighter side of things, the shift linkage upgrade is relatively inexpensive and the updated suspension is not a necessity - I believe it just makes the suspension bushings last longer along with improving driveability. That said, after I did the shift linkage upgrade on my 94, I haven't experienced any other problems. I haven't had any problems with the old-style suspension. The only real improvement I can think of would be a steering brace to ease up on the torque steer.
The only other cars that I've really worked on have been Ford, Mazda and Nissan - so the Saab is definitely better made in comparison. I helped a friend work on his BMW 3-series, and I gotta say that Saab is at least comparable in terms of quality of parts and design. The Saab is definitely a lot easier to work on!
