Hello everyone:
I've been reading these postings quite a bit in the last few days, having spent about 1000 dollars on a new clutch for my 95 saab v6. My clutch was finished last Saturday, but now (Thursday) my clutch cable has already significantly weakened, acting the same way it did right before it snapped and I replaced it and the clutch all together. Now, I talked to the mechanic, and he agreed that it was another faulty cable. Big surprise, as replacing this one tomorrow will give me my fifth new cable in 3 years of owning the car.
Now, I've noticed on this message board that this clutch cable thing is (to put it mildly) not so unique in the Saab world...so much so, that this reoccuring problem seems to be causing a number of people to give up on their otherwise fine Saabs. I understand that there is a hydraulic conversion out there that takes care of the problem--but why, if everyone (including SAAB) knows that this cable is a terrible design/manufacturing mistake, does the customer have to pay...five times!!?? And for what is clearly a manufacturing problem! Are there not any ways that Saab can be pressed to fix this with something better? I'm not normally a fan of class-action suits (I laughed when the tire/rim one showed up in the mail), but when my last cable broke suddenly, I was in serious L.A. traffic, and I put myself, my passengers, and the people around me in some serious danger. I find this unacceptable.
Since this particular model of SAAB is getting older, maybe it is too late to expect some responsibility from the manufacturer...I don't know. All I know is, when something breaks in four days (or two back-to-back days, 400 miles from home, in my other clutch adventure!) there is something clearly wrong. Does anyone know of anything that can be done about this? There seem to be plenty of you on here that have gone through the same experience. Please help.
