Tony:
I agree with your point of view. I have owen several BMWs and I'm a club member, and let me tell you, it is very different with BMW. Just pick up a copy of 'Roundel', there are plenty of letters in print of raging owners screaming about flaws and manufacturing issues, and they are not kind at all. By allowing this type of comment in the forums and through the club puts the pressure on the maker to change, and they are listening. This = pick up the tab for poor design, and or redesign and make parts better, even on cars 10 to 20 years old. This board hardly allows negative comments, posts are deleted as "flaming". I understand this - we would have nothing but negative slop and the spirit helpfulness of this board would be lost. However, there are repeating issues that come up time and time again and alot of these cars are under 100,000 miles and the repairs needed are outragous. They need to be exposed and talked about, perhaps Saab will be listening.
By the way I drove a VW bug that was built in 69. I did a complete restoration, but kept the clutch cable. I sold it in 93. The other day the guy that purchased it from me walked into the studio (2004), told me he just sold it. Still running and shifting with the original clutch cable.
