IIHS is not the only institute. For example, the 9-5 has the highest crash test rating ever in the EuroNcap and in the same test in America with the IIHS it rated only acceptable. Why the diffference? Apparantly because in theIIHS there was too much of an injury to the driver's right foot. There were many Saab owners who complained about this and advocated doing away with IIHS or suing IIHS. I was one who said it was stupid. Some test is better than no test. You didn't hear me tout how good the 8-5 did in the EuroNcap though. It is just one test. It tests front offset collisions. It does not test side impacts (which by the way in the EuroNcap both the 9-5 and 9-3 had scores of 100 and only one Volvo score that high) nor does it test for rear impacts or rollovers or accidents with animals, or trees or telephone poles; all of which cause serious injuries and deaths. Saab tests its cars for all of these types of injuries.
One of the reasons I put so much stock in the Folksam statistics is because they are statistics from Sweeden where presumably the topography is very similar and the drivers are very similar. I'm sure that in Seweeden there would not be much diffeence in the Volvo driver, the Saab driver, the Audi driver, the Bmw driver or the MB driver.
