You're right, American cars rarely win comparos because American cars are rarely as good as imports. Yes, Hondas are bland, but they're built so damn well, they just reek of quality and attention to detail. Same for Toyotas I guess, although I find Toyotas even blander than Hondas.

I love my 9-3, but I'd never rank it above an A4 or any BMW (except maybe for one of those ratty Ti's). I wish the 9-3 were a better car. In my case, I needed to be able to haul a lot of stuff, I desperately wanted something with a little personality and the "right" image, and the car was $8000 off sticker.

If Saab built better cars, they wouldn't have to take $8000 off. I wouldn't have spent the $32000 my car stickered at, but at $24000 it was the most car for the price.

Yes, I have driven a loaded Intrigue (test drove it for my mom, who was thinking about it but got an Avalon instead). There was nothing wrong with it, but it was numb, had terrible understeer, had a powerful but ancient engine that became useless over 4500 RPM, and interior fit and finish were absolutley loathsome. Awful. But I'm not sure what the statistics say about initial quality, and one experience doesn't mean much.

Haven't driven the Alero or the new Aurora, although my dad owns a 1st generation Aurora that I liked a lot, despite its obesity and relatively weak motor (250 hp is NOT enough to haul a car that fat around).

Sales numbers tell the story. GM continues to lose market share, as it has for decades. Wonder why?
