My basic comments apply to the latest Taurus (e.g., still might be) as well as the earlier and were directed more at overall car design and not at the styling. Also, it is based only on comparison to other cars in its class (mainstream American sedans) at a particular point in time and doesn't reflect my personal automotive interests.
That said I must admit for a traditional American sedan the latest styling of the Taurus really is sharp (except for the tacky chrome trunk trim). Also, again, for the class of car it is I think it is at or near the top. If I was in the market for such a car I might just buy it.
Just the same this isn't the sort of automotive offering someone gets excited about--it is not an exceptional design. Having driven one (rental) I can say it handles all right for what it is but that the handling would not be acceptable to me for my personal car.
More to my point is that this is the only decent general automotive product that Ford US offers and it has not received the attention it deserves because Ford is obsessed with SUVs and Trucks like no other manufacture in the world. In that sort of environment I don't see why one would expect SAAB to fair any better under Ford than GM. It really is going to come down to a question of how much freedom and indepedence GM gives to SAAB and that might depend more on what SAAB owners demand than anything else.
