You right, the Americans rarely win comparisons. But, what I've noticed lately is that the Americans manufacturers are gaining ground in the comparos, which I find optimistic. I don't classify, American cars with the imports, simply because they are different in almost every way. But, I do agree with you that imports are generally better than domestics...except when it comes to trucks/SUVs.
PS - A Toyota Avalon should really be compared with the Aurora, instead of the itrigue, they are different classes. Maybe you should drive the new Intrigue with the new 3.5l DOHC V6. That engine isn't ancient. BTW, I like to think of the old pushrod V6s as bulletproof, not ancient.
