After posting this, I got to thinking: Somebody (maybe you, I forget) said: BMW is performance. Volvo is safety. Mercedes is prestige or whatever. What is Saab?
Saab is quirky. That's really what it is -- quirky and useful if I can use 2 words. That hatch holds gobs of stuff.
So, as you say, there's a big risk by abandoning quirkiness. They may be left with nothing.
But, in response, I ask: What is Audi? I can't think of a single adjective, a single trait they're famous for. Maybe technological advancement, but mostly they just build kick-ass cars, with an emphasis on technology.
I'm beat. I don't know what they should do. I always thought Saabs were popular within the limo-liberal, pinko crowd, but everybody here seems to be planning to vote for Bush (as I am), so you can't even call Saab the Car for Rich Pinkos. As I said...it beats me. Maybe there's no need for Saab anymore. Will the market support yet another entry-luxury sedan? Made by GM??!?!? Right now, I don't see that happening.
Half the Saabs I see have ski racks on them, but making The Car for Skiers doesn't seem like a lucrative business. Any ideas? Somebody tell me: BMW is performance. Volvo is safety. Mercedes is luxury for 80-year-olds. What is Saab?
