Great post, JD!
By the way, the reason I enjoy Saabs (and this BB) is b/c Saabs reflect the design compromises of people like me. Simply put, I happen to have a enjoy a certain
practical/fun and
reliability/performance and
big/small and
power/efficiency and
unique/unobtrusive and
old style/new style...
BALANCE
I feel very strongly about the balance I have chosen, but that particular balance is not well represented amongst those who design and make cars and other 'design-intensive' goods. I've particular taste in watches, electronics, sunglasses, pens and the like, as well - not nec'ly hugely flashy or expensive ones but defitely premium and defintely 'well-made'. (I suspect this affliction is common amongst Saab owners). I guess I just have an unpopular balance. (Don't call me IMbalanced - the voices in my head say I'm just fine) Saab is one of the marks that seems somehow (marketing research? brain-washing me? witchcraft? spy satellites?) seems to know what balance I would like and then consistently makes cars on the basis of that information. They design and make cars the way I might if I could.
The spy shot makes me worry that maybe Saab isn't listening to people with my balance anymore - its listening to the balance of the herd. Being one who doesn't relate to the herd's balance and wouldn't want to, I'm REALLY glad to hear that the shot was probably fake and in any case not a great representation of where one of my favorite world brands is going.
