I currently have a 2000 Viggen Coupe and a 2000 Grand Cherokee Limited. I really like both cars, but lets just say I drive the Viggen everyday. The Jeep is a great family car. We have a V8 and I love the power of the Jeep. The Jeep was by far the best 4x4 with all the creature features for the money. This is the third Jeep we have owned - our first was a 1988 Cherokee Laredo.
Here is how I compare the two: Clearly the Jeep has a bit more utility, but it certainly won't be as much fun to drive as the Saab. Both will have higher than average depreciation and you will likely be able to get good deals on both if you try hard. Jeep service is average and I never get a loaner at the Jeep place. Jeep is more comfortable overall and has a better stereo. Saab is safer. Both have their quirky problems (i.e. build quality). Saab handles 100 times better (obvious). Can't tow a boat with the Saab. Jeep makes me the average Dallas SUV driver - the Saab is unique.
If you go with the Jeep and can pull of a deal I recommend the Limited upgrade. Sometimes you can really swing a deal. The limited is awesome - especially if you are married. It has two remotes with memory seats settings attached to each. Unlock the car and everything goes in place. Saab could learn something here.
I have to admit though....ever since I bought the Saab my wife really likes the 9-5 wagon - that may be the next wagon in our family. I like the Volvo x-country. With a 2000 Jeep in hand we won't be buying either any time soon though:)
