Time for my 2 cents:
I'll second MJM's emissions reason. I'm selling a Contour SVT for my new 9-3 SE, and if you are accelerating hard and change gears, the throttle will hang open. The Ford service guys told me that the computer is keeping the throttle butterflies open to ensure that the fuel, which is still flowing because the fuel pump is supplying fuel at 6500rpms, has enough air to properly combust. It was easy to check for. I could be sitting still, rev up the engine to about 4000rpm, and let off the gas. The engine would slowly drop down to about 2000 rpm, then fall off very quickly back to idle. I noticed the 9-3 does the same thing, more or less. Thank the EPA. The other way of saving the enviroment is how Nissan does it. When you back off the gas, supposedly the fuel is cutoff instead of the throttle butterflies being kept open. It might seem better, but go hang out on a Maxima board and listen to everyone complaining that it makes their gear changes very jerky.
My 2 cents, for what it's worth,
Steve
