Only an accountant can figure out that you need to buy your SAAB for at least 15% lower than MSRP for the deal to make any economic sense.

Since BMW's, Audi's and Acura's all have better residuals, it enables them to charge closer to MSRP for the cars. Supply and demand have something to do with this as well.

I compared my '00 9-3 convertible with the BMW 323i convertible before I leased. The MSRP of the SAAB was about $41K and the BMW was about $39,000 with similar equipment. Many of the standared features on a SAAB (leather seats) cost extra with BMW. However, the lease payment for the SAAB was about $170 less than the BMW, all other terms being equal.

Why? Because the capital cost of the SAAB was about $34,500 and there was no discount on the BMW. Now, if you asked me which car was better to drive, I'd have to say BMW, but it was not $6,000 better ($170 x 36 payments). Also, BMW's cost more to insure than SAAB's.

No wonder SAAB depreciation is so high, the selling price is low relative to other cars in its class. This is a marketing decision made by SAAB. High MSRP's and give big discounts to make customers think they're getting a great deal. I'll bet that if you compare a reasonable SAAB sales price and depreciation vs. other car's actual sales price and depreciation, there isn't as much difference as you think.

One way to protect yourself against depreciation is to compare lease payments on similar vehicles, even if you intend to buy them. Sometimes discounts are negotiated with the dealer and sometimes they are buried in the interest and/or residuals on the vehicles. Using lease payments to compare real cost of the car actually even the playing field, since all of these factors (including estimated depreciation over the life of the lease )are used in determining the monthly payment.

Is this enough accountant's talk for you?
