If shops would clean throttle body on a regular basis>> Posted by SWEDECAR [Email] (#112) [Profile/Gallery] (more from SWEDECAR) on Sun, 16 Nov 2003 10:09:35 In Reply to: Thottle Body cleaning., Steven, Sat, 15 Nov 2003 22:39:19 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
lets say at every major service (30K) customers would have a lot less idle problems. And DIY (and non Saab mechanics) people wouldn't have to keep messing with the base idle screw.
I don't know how many hundreds of Saabs I have had through the years where the customer had idling problems and the only thing I needed to do was to clean out the throttle body and set all the basic adjustments back to spec (that had gotten screwed up by someone else).
In some few cases you actually need to replace faulty parts, but that is less common.
Modern cars (from mid 90s) are a little bit less sensitive for dirty throttle bore, but not much.
Volvo are having the excact same problems and have had them since the 70s when fuel injection (and automatic idle control) was introduced.
On most Saabs and Volvos, the procedure to clean is quite easy and that's why it should be done at a major service. The shop might charge an extra nominell fee for it above standard service rate.
Make sure to buy and use Oxygen sensor safe carb cleaner. I don't even know if unsafe carb cleaner is around anymore.
But be aware that IF the Oxygen sensor is on its last leg (150K miles or so), you might bring it over the edge by using carb cleaner and it fails. This would have happened anyway in the near future and the Carb cleaner just sped up the process a little.
