That's irresponsible... Posted by Peter [Email] (#2804) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Peter) on Thu, 22 Feb 2007 09:05:07 In Reply to: Re: Every 3000 or 5000?, Ron, Wed, 21 Feb 2007 15:09:16 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
...just stating flatly that a 3,000 interval will save you money vs. a 5,000 interval. The type of oil notwithstanding, you have to take into account driving habits, climate, frequency of use.
Either way, I'd like to hear from an expert (not a mechanic, but an automotive engineer) that changing your oil more frequently than factory recommendations is truly worth the $$. My guess is, you won't find one. it's not in the manufacturer's interest to sabotage their own product (and consider that a lot of folks have their oil changed at the dealer...talk about free money...).
Now, your own peace of mind is another thing. (For the record, I go every 5,000 miles or 6 months with Mobil 1; don't drive very much.) Most of us are naturally suspicious and a bit anal about maintenance, so we'll err on the side of caution. For the record, my mother has a 2000 Passat changed "by the book" and runs perfectly strong, gets 32mpg, and doesn't leak a drop at 90-something k.
