Thought I'd post a followup to yesterdays post concerning using "cheap" (Advance Auto) front brake rotors on my 200 Viggen. Went out today to see if I could find a reason these new rotors seem to add a shimmy to the car...and I believe I've been successful! Found two problems...the first being how poorly these Advance Auto rotors "pilot" over the hub. The original Saab rotors pilot very closely over the hubs...they slip on closely but you feel no radial play. The Advance Auto rotors are very sloppy...I measured .006-008" radial clearance! I "cured" this by inserting four .006" shims between rotor and hub to center it up. The second problem was in the rear machined face where the rotors bolt up against the hub. The Advance Auto rotors are machined flat across this face but the original Saab rotors have about a very slight, 3/8" wide boss/ridge around the inner diameter. This sloght boss results in a slight airgap all around the bolt circle. Moisture gets in there, resulting in rust forming on the hub. If you don't get this rust off the flat face of the Advance Auto rotors may not fit flat up against the hub. By centering the Advance rotor on the hub and cleaning all the rust scale off the hub face I was able to reduce the rotor runout (using a dial indicator) from .012" down to .003", which is within specs I believe. Driving it afterwards revealed no shimmy! Hopefully it will remain that way for many miles!
