there is a slight communication issue, or he might be a conspiracy theorist.
I have 2000 9-3 Viggen 2.3L (128k mi), but majority of engine components are the same so possibly relevant. My issue was a small oil leak at the gasket between engine and tranny. forget exact name but it's the gasket . Saab master mechanic replaced the gasket twice under warranty but leak would come back. so that area has been always moist with oil. wasn't too thrilled about it but has been no problem. however , I don't know it's that but engine burns 1L oil every 1500-2000mi, which is within the normal allowance I heard. then sometimes oil level goes low and engine makes ticking noise. I add some oil, and immediately fixed.
What I'm trying to say is ur mechanic could have meant to explain something like my problem.
I don't understand how clutch can have anything to do with engine noise. but ur problem might be the dreaded sludge. it blocks oil flow in the engine starving oil and lower oil pressure and the ticking noise from the lifters.
Yeah if he meant that, which I highly doubt, it's Saab's mistake, but otherwise what he said doesn't make sense.
maybe now I'm imagining... :)
