Sludge is thickened oil inside the engine. those thick gunk builds up on the filtering mesh blocking good oil flow, that lowers the oil pressure inside engine, that starves oil access to some parts where excessive heat builds up and crack or deform some parts inside engine and seize.
normally sludge has nothing to do with oil leak.
there r many here that knows this very well, and if u search there should be lots of discussions.
