My experience with checking the code at Autozone is as follows:
They will ask the make, model and year of car (while still inside the store) to get an idea whether it is OBDII as they probably don't have a scanner for OBDI and this saves them the trip outside if they can determine that the car can't be scanned by their scanner. They are not asking in order to set their scanner. With manufacturer specific codes (P1XXX, IIRC), their generic reader will spit out the most common fault "name" for the code as well as the numeric code. It is a problem when you try to make sense of the code by its name. I would never just get the name, but always ask for the specific code number. That way you can find somewhere to reference the actual manufacturer code, such as here. My wife bought me a scanner last Christmas that allows me to enter the make of the car, so no more Autozone for me.
