My 2001 9-3 has been good Posted by Sondeen [Email] (#796) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Sondeen) on Mon, 21 Jan 2013 11:04:06 In Reply to: Hello and questions- new 2001 9-3, TomPalmer, Sat, 19 Jan 2013 14:55:35 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I have a 2001 9-3 base. Just rolled to 96K mi today. I bought it with 25k.
I have had few mechanical problems. The idler pulley on the serp belt started to squeel at about 50k. This is a well documented issue on this board. Plan to replace these at each belt change (60k) or sooner.
I also preemptively dropped the oil pan and had the oil pick up screen replaced at about 50K, I don't think the original owner used full synthetic oil as there was a little sludge in the oil pan when this was done. I have been doing 5k or 1 year oil changes with Mobil 1 ever since.
I had some intermitent smoke out the exhaust at cold start up a few years ago. I replaced the factory PCV kit with the PCV update #6 kit and that problem has not returned after 25K miles. The PCV update is something you should consider doing if it was not done on the car you are considering.
Around 85k I replaced the mid section exhaust flex pipe.
My DIC, a know problem, was replaced on recall at about 50 or 55k. It was still working fine at that point. The updated DIC part I was given has been working fine since.
One thing to look for is rusting on the body just in front of the rear wheels. I had some small parts in this area on my car repaired and repainted.
There was also a recall on the fuel filter or fuel line bracket. You may want to make sure that was done.
