How DIRE is this? Oil thin, oil light on.

This morning after a 25-commute to work, the exclamation point caution light triangle came on and had a beep that repeated, along with a flickering and sometimes constant oil light.
Strange, because I had just checked the oil last night and, (to my surprise, because it uses some) it was completely full and "cleaner than I expected." Last evening my coolant had boiled because the wire to one side of the replacement resistor I'd installed last year wasn't making good contact. I fixed that and didn't have the boiling problem this morning.
Any ideas on what might be going on?
After letting it cool for 4 hours, I checked the oil again - full and pretty clean. Between my fingers this 10w30 Mobil1 doesn't feel right - watery and easily wiped off. Smells good and doesn't have a milky look.
Ran the engine and I hear a pretty rapid tempo click that shouldn't be there!
My plan is to change the oil and filter immediately. However, that doesn't address the underlying problem. My only hope is that my coolant boil-over situation somehow fouled the oil and won't occur again, if my wire decides to stay on.
PLEASE CHIME IN TO DIRECT ME or CONFIRM MY PLANNED COURSE OF ACTION.
Thanks!
