I had very similar issue on my '99 9-3 base turbo, and it was (is) sludge. My indy dropped the pad, checked the bearings and cleaned things up. Was good for a while and then it came back.

It will ding" one the engine is hot (normally just a few miles of driving depending on how hot/cold outside). I've tried additives & such to no real effect, but part of that could be I've relegated the car to staying very close to home, like just the "hard" mileage of the mile & a half to & from the commuter train station.

Interestingly, when the light does come on, if I turn off the engine for a bit and restart, I can get a little further... guessing taking off the pressure on the screen allows some of the sludge to fall off.
