Was the "economy" seal you used the SKF one? I think they only sell that other than the genuine Saab.
Now that I'm in super-frustrated mode I've been looking at what I feel is ridiculous minutiae... like that seal. It *definitely* doesn't fit like the factory seal - the seal surface is a couple mm inbound from factory. The other specs (ID/OD) are identical... that may not be true in reality, but it's true on paper. I definitely agree it's not a tight-feeling fit. On my last install I went for it anyway figuring if there was a problem with a name-brand seal sold for a specific application it couldn't be the seal. I'm thrilled/stunned to hear I'm not alone. :(
Over the past couple nights I dug up every compatible seal and the SKF and Timken seals are (on paper) the same dimensions, while the National (Federal Mogul) seal mimics the factory seal. The SKF and Timken seals are unprepared raw metal on the OD, while the National seal is a "redicoat" (resin-coated) OD. SKF makes a seal other than what eeuro carries which more closely mimics the factory dimensions *and* is coated. It's all very exciting.
Simultaneously, I took an actual look at the torque converter's hub on the transmission I have out of the car right now - there is some polishing where the factory seal rides, and then some actual grooving closer to the base. That grooving shouldn't be there, but also wouldn't be a problem with the factory seal (which begs the question how it got there...). I don't know what the hub on the transmission in the car looks like, but I will soon. ;)
Anyway, last night I ordered another SKF seal, one of the similar Timken seals, and the coated/shorter National seal for comparison. I also ordered a pair of "repair sleeves" for the torque converter hub - they add .010" to the OD to make up for wear and create a new sealing surface. The seals are only ~$5 from rockauto, but after your post I'm wondering if I should order a genuine Saab seal from eeuro so I can compare all four.
Where I am is that it's possible I have a mechanical problem that is trashing torque converters, but that only seems plausible on the torque converter that I logged 1500 miles on. I don't think the same could be said about one that logged 8. Which kinda leaves me with the seal - the SKF 14772 that I've installed four of and gotten four leaks. :|
I'll compare the four new seals, compare both torque converters and pump bushings, and I'll see where that gets me. I really appreciate your response - it gives me a lot of hope! I'll probably get to my "wtf eeuro" email shortly. :|
