Clutch cable dilemma

I have recently replaced the snapped clutch cable in my 1995 900S with assistance from instructions in WIS, Haynes, and a lengthy saabnet posting by Kyle Morley in Sep 2004. The elongated eyelet is attached to the clutch pedal, the self-adjusting mechanism (with supplied washer) is seated tightly though and against the firewall, the cable sheathing is fitted in the bracket on the wheel housing then fed down between two aluminum tubes (A/C tubes, I think) and a brace supporting the brake line manifold and on to the gearbox slotted hole. The nipple of the dampener is seated in and protrudes though the slotted hole on the gearbox, and the wire stop on the forward end of the cable is in the coupling lever. Finally, I pulled the coupling lever forward and release it several times which compresses/decompresses the self-adjust spring on the cable. That all seems straight forward and according to instructions. Before installation I compared the new and old cables and found them to be of the same length.
The problem is that when I push the clutch pedal down I can hear the cable ratcheting through the self-adjust spring and the coupling lever at the other end barely moves (about ¼”) towards the firewall, and when the pedal is released the cable has excessive slack. Subsequent pedal strokes have no tension. Tension is restored when I pull on the self-adjust spring on the cable sheath, but the problem recurs with a single pedal stroke.
Can anybody suggest why the coupling lever does not move toward the firewall when the clutch pedal is pressed down?
