Frank-
I've got a 95 900SETC and my door rattles like hell, too. It's my understanding that part of the "SE" package includes the upgraded "subwoofer" in the door. The normal setup was just the 3 1/2" in the dash, and the rear speakers. The "subwoofers" had their own seperate amplifier (Tiny) so I am sure there is a low-pass crossover somewhere near there which only lets the lower frequencies through. If you replace these speakers with anything other than a strictly MIDRANGE or MIDBASS speaker, it wouldn't reproduce the upper frequencies (treble).
With that said, what are you trying to accomplish. Are you just trying to get rid of the rattle?? You say it has "too much bass." If you're happy with the sound, and simply annoyed by the rattles, try simply DYNAMATTING the doors. Dynamat is like a thick rubber material that absorbs resonances and vibrations (also gives greater soundproofing). This should remove MOST of the rattle. Any shop should be able to install for around $100, but it's easy to do yourself (just need to cut to fit, and use a heat gun or hair dryer).
I personally am installing a much higher-end audio system with three seperate amplifiers and a 12" subwoofer, because I HATE the factory system and think it has NOT ENOUGH bass, which distorts too easily. This could be what causes extra vibrations. Some posts suggested that by going to an external subwoofer (in trunk or hatch) give MUCH better sound and don't resonate the door panels since they're not in the doors.
I am by no means an expert, car audio is just a hobby of mine. Hope this helps.
Happy Saabing!
