I feel your pain, in the expense way, I had the whole front suspension done from the bolts on the tower down to and including the control arms a year ago this week. I still weep openly when I consider the bill on that one.
Replacing a good clutch sucks.
About the other stuff, my experience was that one of my tie rod ends was pretty dead, and the other was getting there, but I'm on NYC roads. I just did both outers. It's kind of an 'as long as you're there' kind of thing. Surprisingly, my ball joints weren't bad even with the other wear on the assembly (replaced anyway along w/ new control arms).
As for ball joints, I seem to remember reading about unloading the wheel somehow to test them -- i.e. they won't feel bad just jacked up. I wish I had more, I'll look around...
