I had only just started paying serious attention to this board a year ago, so I didn't know about the Abbott TCA bushings, etc. (or maybe they weren't out yet? I remember seeing the poly rack brace...)
Anyway, I went in because the front end was seriously broken. People describe thumps and rattles all the time, but it started making truly ominous noises, the ones you don't have to ask about. The upshot was bent control arms, dead strut bearings, dead shocks, and everything not called 'a spring' in the whole assemblage. He showed me. It was true.
The tie rod ends came later; during a brake job the mechanic mentioned one of the tie rods felt loose. Soon after, I looked at it, I couldn't tell myself how loose it was, but the little grease boot was torn, so I figured it was DOA and the other one would be soon, so I did the pair.
Got an alignment today! I think it may have been a Hunter unit, he said 'he just got it' and it was 'the absolute best' but disappeared before I could ask. But it still shakes, yes, it's definitely dead drive joints. :( But I do have one bit of news for you in sepaking to this new mechanic -- he sees lots of rear oil seals go at ~120,000mi. in the NG, and he volunteered this info to me for no particular reason. He's supposed to be very good.
I guess he noticed the HBC on the test drive because he was gone awhile. I DID warn him...his only comment was "you have alot of ... power ... in your car..." after closing the hood to see what was going on under there.
