Depending on financial considerations, I would seriously consider the extended coverage.
If one totals up the cost to repair the most common items that can occur at higher mileage (e.g. DI cassette, trans seal, and belt pulley), that total comes close to equalling the $1500. The extended warranty also allows one to go to the dealer for other things that one might not properly attend to if one did not have coverage (e.g. rattles or a hatch seal minor leak). Peace of mind that comes with the coverage is also a consideration.
To be honest, I had the opportunity to purchase the extended coverage with the most recent higher-mileage 900 I purchased (a '96 turbo coupe), figuring I could do most maintenance and repairs myself. I now realize this was probably a mistake. The single most important element in this realization is learning the number of items in the NG900 that require the ISAT or TECH2 hand-held computer to properly diagnose. Another element was totalling the cost of even minor repairs at the dealers' labor rate.
I'm happy to hear you think highly of the car. IMHO, higher-mileage Saabs are one of the great lesser-known deals in the auto world today - outstanding performance, good relialibility, outstanding safety, good economy, and excellent utility.
