I hate to say it but there just may be no way to mitigate your loss of hours on this procedure other than polishing the job you did off again and re-applying wax strictly following manufacturer's instructions.
I have a black '99 9-3. I use a Mom 'n Pop product line put together by an anal Porsche owner in Victoria BC who says he has won concours awards. Although he's a tad cheap with the quantities, the price is OK, the results are very satisfying (no swirl if done right) and the wax lasted through the winter (two coats everywhere - three on the front of the car).
He says he uses more carnuba than the commercial brands but I have no way of checking this out. I'd say that among the black cars I've seen in my neighborhood, mine's the blackest.
To do the thing right, there are three stages in the spring - polish - wax - and clear-shine spray. The car finish looks deep and wet when done and it takes most of the daylight hours on a Saturday to finish off, especially of you do all the glass, plastics, interior finishes and wheels (with other products of course) the same day.
The cleaner you keep a car, the easier it is to keep it clean.
