The reason, SAAB, Vovlo, BMW and Mercedes recommend strict use of No phospate is because the path the coolant takes from the radiator to the the coolant lines through and around the engine.
Aluminum has different grades. The light grade aluminum in the radiator is slightly different than on the engine. However, the aluminum/metal of the engine is formulated with different chemicals within the aluminum which cause the phosphate in the coolant to collect the corrosive material and chemical compositions from the engine metals and route it all through the cooling system.
When these free raticals are released and route through the radiator, they attach themselves similar to a clogging agent does in a heart valve. Except, in the radiator, it begins to breakdown the aluminum with the chemical and phosphate loose elements at the point where they begin to attach. thus causing a point soo weak that the hot pressure eventually bursts a hole in the radiator.
