I remember reading an article about the different anti-freeze/coolants avaiable from MB, VW, etc. One statement was that the No-Phosphate anti-freeze was because tap water is typically used to mix with anti-freeze and that hard tap water would react with phosphates causing some salts to develop in the anti-freeze. I just use DEX-COOL (it is phosphate and silicate free) and distilled water. A really good flush with clean water to remove any old coolant and then re-fill as needed. No problems in my Alfa or Saab, at least so far (2 years and counting).
