Thanks. I’ve been doing a lot of reading of past postings on this board ( 3-4 hours worth). My biggest concern is the timing belt failure, and not from just a belt that is worn out, but from the belt-cog/pulley (attached to the cam shaft). I’ve read here that since the cylinder heads are off set, the cogs on one head’s camshafts extend further away from the head than the other side, and these cogs use a rather long bolt which holds them to the camshaft. Reading here, I got the impression that the longer bolt on the wider cam belt cogs gets strained and can come loose, allowing the cog to wobble…A problem if the bolt isn’t tightened fully. I vaguely remember reading where the extra long (and thus highly stressed) bolt, holding the cog to the camshaft, have loosened, allowing the cog to wobble ,with the belt coming off. This was not long after the dealer had replaced the timing belt, which does concern me. I do agree that a newer model (97’ and newer) would be better, yet I have no choice as I'm in Germany and I prefer a US spec model (so I can take it back to the States with me, I’m associated with the US Military, but not in the military), and there are no other US spec SAABs for sale by private sellers at the moment (perhaps some US Spec car dealers, catering to the US Military and located near large US military bases, would have some newer models, but that would be 2-4 hours drive away and they usually ask a very high price, much higher than what one would be able to get one for in the US, as there are many more to choose from). I‘m only considering this car because of the low price of $4,500 (asking) with it’s relatively low mileage of around 80ish K miles, it’s safety features (2x air bags) and the newer technology at the time the car first came out. As far as minor to semi complex work (rear valve cover gasket replace), I'm not too concerned as a DIY job. But engine damage, head gasket replacement or transmission failure do scare me. And I would much rather spend $7,500 on a newer model with no probs than spend $4,500 on this and have to put $2,000~$3000 into it, because I would still end up with a $4,500 car.
I’ll still look at the car, and now (thanks to you, and others) I now know to ensure that the timing belt was recently replaced (but that long bolt is still a concern). Any other early (94"~95') 900 V-6 owners want to comment, or have anything to add from their experiences, good or bad?
Thanks,
MarkC
