But it seems like your best options may be to get creative and avoid the V6.
How long will you be in germany? Is it possible you can stick it out without buying a car until you're back? Would it be worth it to get a cheap german car and sell it before you move?
What about bringing back a euro-spec car? I haven't done much research into it, but I imagine newer euro-spec cars should at least match US domestic emissions. What about grey-marketing your car when you bring it back?
It almost seems like the cost of federalizing a eurospec car would be less prohibitive than the hazards of the V6 (between the engine failure and the transmission issues).
Is it possible to research what eurospec cars might be in your price range and won't be expensive to bring to the US? I imagine in germany you might be able to do well on an audi 90 or a4 or a bmw 3 series...
Just thoughts. I have no experience with this issue so I wish you the best of luck.
