If the spring is ok, you can calibrate as you suggested. But if the spring is not right, nothing can be done. Only if the spring was perfect would the wrench be dead on across the range. So I still maintain my statements.
I did not say anything about 4%. 4% error at 90 ft-lbs is an error of 3.6 ft-lb. When tigening wheel bolts, you can feel the difference with a change of 3 or 4 ft-lbs in the setting of the TW. Try it. You will see what you can feel. Set the wrench 4 fp-lb soft then thighten to the click, now increase by 4 and feel the resistance ramp up before the click.
That was my point, you don't know where you are. If the wrench is good you are probably in +/- 4%. If its not good, its worse than that.
And you should trust your feel of how fasteners behave. If there is a mis-print in a coversion from the metric you can use a TW to break a fastener. But you can feel that this is wrong if you are aware of such things. And I was torquing head bolts and one felt wrong, it was not ramping up its resistance. Pulled it out and it was obviously necking at the threads. Thats now in a trophy cabinet is a met lab. Obviously tighening to torque would have left a busted threaded end in the block!
