My approach that I have used for a long time is this...
rinse the wheels when cool...
spray on Simple Green....let it sit for a minute or so....
use the wheel brushes I got from "Auto Geek" (autogeek.com)
the wheels clean up easily
I use a tooth brush on the brake calibers to keep them silver and to remove the brake dust...
I use a 1" wide sponge on a stick (paint department product at Home Depot) to get into the recesses of the lug nuts...
I dab a small amount of Zymol SAAB wax on the painted outer surface of the wheel and plastic SAAB emblem when done to keep the paint glossy and to help in keeping the brake dust less adherent to the painted wheel parts...the wax also seems to keep the SAAB wheel insignia from oxidizing...my 2001 9-5 shows no fading of the wheel insiginias...so it must work...
I have had laudible results with my method...
