OT: Compensation for carrying pager on weekends?

Hello all, happy Thursday!
Just looking for some general information here. I'm a programmer at a small company that (among other things) provides products to customers via a website. And like many others, the site has an annoying tendency to crash unexpectedly, especially on weekends.
So management is starting to make noises about having people carry a pager and be "on call" on the weekends to come in and fix the server if it goes down.
I've known a couple of people in similar situations, and most of them were compensated somehow for having to be on call during non-working hours. IIRC, sometimes the compensation was financial, other times it was additional time off, etc.
So what I'd like to hear from you guys about is, how prevalent is this practice? Basically, I'm trying to decide how much of a stink to make if they try to make me carry a beeper on the weekends and don't offer any compensation (which is what I anticipate)...
Any input is appreciated!
