Does car mechanics deserve to live (make a living)????? It seems that the general opinion is that car mechanics should see their work as a "call" and not a profession, just like many people look at the clergy profession when they find out that they actually charge for their services for weddings, baptism, consultation and so forth.
I have heard from time to time when presenting the bill, "So, what kind of discount do I get". Like they take for granted that I overcharged and need to reduce the price.
A close friend of mine is a computer/networking wiz. His line of work has been kind of slow for awhile and he was laid off. Now it starts to pick up and he was hired again.
Starting salary is about 70-100K a year for his kind of work (and that is a salary, not a chase for every hour).
He doesn't have to buy any tools or pay license fees or hazardous waste fees or rent a shop unit close to where his customers are. He only needs to go in and tap on a couple of keys on the key board (if something goes bad).
The one big reason he is so good at what he's doing is that he have a burning interest in computers and spend a lot of time playing/working with them.
Why does that profession deserve that kind of money???
BECAUSE it's a free country and supply and demand rules.
NO ONE has to take their car for repairs anywhere, and if they do, they can go to whoever they like the best.
It might be that they have to drive 100-200 miles to get to the cheap mechanic, good mechanic or pay $100/hour to have the free loaner car available.
It's all the customers choice.
When they have made their choice, they should not demand that the shop of their choice start to run things the way the "other" shop do.
The shop MIGHT DO changes to attract more customers or just to stay in business but it should not be the customer telling them "well, you know, I only want to pay this much for your repair. Or, could you move your shop to my front yard so I don't have to drive that far.
This was a nice fresh discussion/topic with many angles.
