...homework. ;-] I suggest that you look at more efficient options than these "add-on" panels. While these are the best value for add-on, I think that there are better options that are used instead of traditional roofing materials. I recently saw panels that look similar to the metal roofing panels that run from peak to eave - and they claimed to be more efficient while also eliminating some roofing costs. I know solar shingles are very efficient, but I doubt the return on investment would be there for you.
Another option is to use solar for heating your house's hot water. Although utilities don't usually help pay for this, the payback is often quite rapid - especially in new construction where the cost of traditional equipment can be avoided.
I was fortunate that my roof has a great orientation (directly solar-south) and pitch to maximize the efficiency of this system.
It sounds like you're thinking is on target - and as more people pursue Solar options the costs are sure to continue dropping as technology and competition improve.
