If I had to choose one it would be a Maine Coon, big, mellow, and real easy going. But the pure breds are real $$$ and there are way too many cats already - breeding them seems kinda bad. I strongly recommend going to the local animal shelter and getting a 'found' cat. Fees you pay help other animals and mixed breeds seem to be the best. I currently have a two year old n/male, orange with some stripes, my first time for other than a dark striped n/male in the last 30 years. He's a real sweetheart and best buddy to my 12 year old n/male. Males are often friendlier and more social.
Please don't declaw - I've trained my cats for years to use a heavy sisal door mat as their only scratching place, and trimmed their nails with clippers on a regular basis. It's quite a sight for many people to see a 16# cat upside down in my lap and purring while I clip his nails.
