Some will differ, but when doing to contracts and legal stuff, get a lawyer. It's worth the peace of mind to have someone whose done 1000 closings to be looking at all the details.

We had a condo when we first got married. Worked fine and the appreciation helped us move to a house. Watch out for convenants that prevent you from doing things like working on your car in the parking lot or driveway. Some places you can't even wash the car on the common area. We were OK. Friends weren't.

Talk to several other residents of the complex to see how they like it. Find out how the association is run. Find out about its bank balance and what might be coming up for capital expenditures--that could result in a fee hike.

Don't limit your radius to 1/2 an hour. Going 2 stops further away might get you more for your money.

Even though it's essentially a condo, get it inspected so you know about some gotchas.

Check with the cops about break-ins and the like at the complex you are considering. The bad guys know people in townhouses are out all day.

If you are thinking of kids at some point, see if the place seems ok for kidlets.

If you want pets, see what the rules are. Some places forbid them.

See what kind of house you can get for similar $. If you are a DIY type you may be better long term, especially if you can add on to a house later on.
