This is a story about a drug that is now generic on on the shelf. So drug companies do not have any motivation to promote its use for anything novel, especially if that alternate use could cut into the sales of expensive perscription meds that pay the bills and buy the BMWs.
The drug is cimedidine, the active ingredient in Tagamet. It has some very interesting abilities to fight some viral infections. Example: cold sores (herpes simplex) or shingles-chickenpox (herpes zoster). The effectiveness has been proven in proper studies and results have been published in peer-reviewed scientific journals. But rarely to doctors recommend this for treatment.
Cimedidine also has a good record for curing warts. Warts are a manifestation of the HPV virus. Now the time to eliminate these might be longer than a trip to the doctor for mechanical removal methods, but this still has great merit*. One thing that I have not seen is how effective this drug might be as a topical treatment. This might assist with warts, but they can be deep rooted. I expect that a topical application might work very well with surface infections like cold sores and might also have some value for shingles. Shingles is a condition where zoster that has been hiding in the nerve bundles since typically a childhood infect, breaks out. It is -very painful-.
If someone had a lot of warts, as childen can sometimes be affected, a treatment by pills might be prefered to multiple mechanical methods with heat/cold/acid/electric arc etc. Where off the shelf wart removal remidies are used, cimetidine might be a good adjunct treatment. (Reports on effectivess with warts is mixed. I have not checked to see if dosing differences explain the discrepancies.)
Treatment with modern anti-viral meds can be very very expensive. Often cimedidine is just as effective. Want to learn more? Go to http://www.lef.org and use the search function on 'cimetidine' and there is lots to read. Google also finds some info on the anti-viral properties and used.
I would not advocate taking this drug long term. There can sometimes be side effects. So that can be part of your reading.
So this is just a starter, there is a lot of info out there to read if this peaks your interest. You will find that the doses of cimetidine are higher than as labelled for treatment of stomach problems. The dose for maintenance of stomach problems is also different from that to cure them. Again the 'on the box' dosing is not the whole story.
Treatment is suggested to be as early as possible with an outbreak type virus, to limit the extent of effected tissue.
So this drug combats a few herpes viri and HPV. It might be effective against others as well, but again, other than scientific interest, there is no money in doing studies to determine other uses. Google for [cimetidine virus] and that may disclose some more info.
