Interesting article: hybrid vs. diesel

A friend of mine is in the market for a new (read replacement) car, and is looking at a VW TDI. I don't know a whole lot about diesels except that most people consider them smelly and dirty, and that most diesel car ads tout fuel economy.
I find two things interesting about this article. The first is that is no mention of maintenance. I'm thinking a diesel engine is simpler than the two-engine combo in hybrid engines, and diesel is a proven, well-known technology. Which in my mind, means cheaper maintenance.
The second is the Prius' computer readout, which differed greatly from the actual computed fuel economy. I know that statistically, this trip is just one data point. And Toyota did offer a reasonable explanation, but if fuel economy is their main selling point, you'd think that calculation would be rock-solid.
And here's another link that kinda makes me want to get a diesel car, even if it is a project just to fool around with: http://www.greasecar.com
Just some interesting stuff for a slow Wednesday ...
