the mileage, the environment--or both? The diesel wins on mileage but tends to lose based on emissions, but the hybrid falls short on mileage, but wins on emissions, at least on this test. The jury won't be in on battery packs for a few more years. And how much of them can be recycled? No one knows! And what will they cost? The answer varies widely.
The other thing I look at is the delta--the difference between, say a Saab, and a diesel or hybrid. At 70-75 mph my 9000 CSE will average a respectable 31-32 mpg, maybe a bit more. That is just 6 mpg less than the hybrid, which over the life of the car, isn't enough of a difference to convince me to switch. The 12 mpg difference for the Jetta is much more significant. And when you figure in the premium charged for the Prius, there is no long term financial payback, especially when you factor in battery replacement.
I like the idea of hybrids, but they are not the answser yet. To me, a well-designed 4 cylinder turbo makes a whole lot more sense for overall use. For lots of short trips, the others are great, but you have to look at your overall usage--and for gearheads like most of us here, which are the most fun to drive.
