I just picked up a mid 1980's Mercedes this weekend. Pics are here - http://www.pokrefke.com/benz/benz.htm
I test drove some TDI's, and they are nice. They accelerate very well, and the engines are (relatively) quiet. The old Benz's accelerate slowly (it takes a lot to get 2 tons moving) but are fine above 20mph. The klatta-klatta-klatta is noticeable only at idle, on the highway you can't tell. Prices on the old Benzes vary widely, I've seen rust buckets for $5k, I picked my rust-free 300 up for much less.
I am not sure if greasel is in my future or not. I'm interested, but don't really have the facilities to process the oil. Some people buy peanut oil from Costco for $3/g and burn that - they're making an environmental statement, not a financial statement.
