$1,000 is a bit tight on the budget if you want to have everything.
Yes, you can go mass market but you get tizzy high and boomy bass.
The NAD suggestion is a great one, go to their website and check out their integrated amps or turner preamp and power amp combo. NAD used to make a CD with an integrated amp but you need to think whether that's a good idea as the CD side may die earlier and you are stuck with half a functioning unit.
I'm afraid just electronics alone from NAD will may bust your budget. You may want to get used NAD gear at reasonable prices at audiogon.com, a great site for used audio equipment. If you don't want to buy things sight unseen, try someone who is selling close to you.
As for speakers, I highly recommend a used pair of Vandersteen 1C or if you don't mind an older model Vandersteen 1B (Google their site as well). These are floor standing speakers (so you don't need stands) and exceptional quality and sound. They are not forward sounding but extremely pleasant to your ears. The 1Cs are $900 new but you can get them used at $450 or lower, the 1B are even cheaper still. I have two systems, one with 1Bs and the main system with Vandersteen 3s. Unless the seller has kids and pets running wild around the house, used speakers are generally in great shape.
Denon, Onkyo units are good (e.g. better than Sony, except their ES Series, or any budget gear from JVC etc...); however, I think their budget lines are not worth the premium. NAD products are better bets, again get used ones if you want to save money.
Get reasonable interconnect cables and speaker cables. Don't cheap out on multi-strand wires from Home Depot. You can used the interconnect cables that may come with the equipment. If you don't mind the look, Radio Shack sells solid core (16 gage ??) hookup wires (don't buy their so called speaker wires or cables) that sound reasonable and they are cheap. These wires are surprising good for the price, better than many multi-strand so-called speaker cables. If you want to give these wires a try, post here after you get your system I'll get you the Radio Shack part number.
Let us know what you end up.
